The Arizona Mushroom Society, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt/tax-deductible non-profit Arizona corporation, and is the state affiliate of the North American Mycological Association. We offer a variety of forays, educational meetings, dinners, and other events designed to appeal to novices and experienced mushroom hunters alike.
NAMA FORAY SPECIES LIST
Thanks to the diligence of our identifiers and mycologists, we have compiled a species list for the NAMA/AMS Regional Foray that was held in August. We found a total of 158 species, subspecies, and variants, which were grouped within 92 genera in 46 different families of basidiomycetes and ascomycetes.
You can see the checklist on MycoPortal, with links to lots of images and scientific data about each taxon. It is still being updated as DNA sequencing data comes in, but largely complete.
Many thanks to Terri Clements, Debbie Viess, Bob Chapman, Dr. Scott Bates, and Dr. Rick Kerrigan for all their hard work on this job.
2017 ANNUAL MEETING
On Saturday, December 9, at 6:30 pm, the AZ Mushroom Society will hold its 2017 Potluck Dinner and Member Meeting in Phoenix. Registration for members and guests is now open. Please let us know if you're coming so we can get a head count.
After dinner and the usual club business, our speaker will be the well-known mycologist Daniel Winkler, whose eco-tour company MushRoaming leads mycological tours to destinations around the globe. He will speak on "The Best of Mushroaming", with pictures of the most exotic mushrooms from places you've never heard of. He has a particular interest in the genus Cordyceps, the so-called "zombie fungus" that infects arthropods and is used medicinally in Asian cultures.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION
As the year comes to a close, it is time to turn our attention to the upcoming Board of Directors election. There are two seats needing to be filled, one occupied by President Christopher May, and the other by Corresponding Secretary Laurie Herring.
Laurie has decided to retire from active leadership after many years of dedicated service to this Society and its predecessor, the Arizona Mushroom Club. We thank her most gratefully for sticking with it this long, and hope that one of our eager young members will step forward to take her place. If you would like to nominate someone else or yourself for a position on the Board, please let the AMS President know well before the meeting.
